  • Special issue on "Multidisciplinary Brain Science Research in Mongolia and Central Asia"
    Vol. 4 No. 3Suppl (2021)

    Research in Mongolia aims to determine the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, diagnostics, and treatment of brain-related disorders in the general population from the fundamental and applied basis of neuroscience. However, due to socioeconomic limitations to basic research in Mongolia, recent studies in neuroscience were primarily clinically oriented.

    The Special Issue aims to publish recent findings of studies on brain-related disorders. The variety of those techniques may extend from simple methods such as blood tests and neurophysiological examinations to more advanced innovative methods such as functional MRI and non-invasive brain stimulation techniques. Examples include validated self-report instruments for disease screening and heart rate variability for testing autonomic nervous functions.

    Moreover, it is imperative to investigate the brain-related disorders concerning the particular effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on mental health and the quality of life of the general population worldwide. The impact of the pandemic on vulnerable individuals such as patients with diabetes, major depressive disorders with suicidal thoughts, or neurodegenerative diseases is to be determined, as well as is expected an increased prevalence of mental disorders including stress-related, alcohol use, depressive, and anxiety disorders during the pandemic.

    Neuroscience is an exciting area in which, at a fast rate, revolutionary advances materialize. The emergence of neuro-technologies is interdisciplinary. It supports the amalgamation of neurobiology and atomic, nano- and micro-sciences as a fascinating path to significant developments in the neuroscience study. It poses a scientific foundation for potential therapeutic strategies.

    Researchers may investigate brain function in people with diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy using technological devices, including MRI scanner and 3-D Computed Tomography. They can do experiments using samples of cells and tissues. The results could contribute to the development of new drugs. Research is being undertaken to use technologies to offer people with prosthetics a sensory sensation, and neurostimulation also helped paralyze people move. Machines can aid the functioning of the human brain in this way. Brain-Machine Interface (BMI) or Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) can track the patient’s psychological state towards therapy and behavioral modification.

    In this special issue, we are pleased to welcome original submission topics related to technologies in neuroscience, either a comprehensive or extensive review or original research articles to a wide variety of issues. We encourage the papers involving studies showing the result of such interdisciplinary integration or potential alliances. Submissions are focusing on but are not limited to the following topics:

    * Neuroimaging development

    * Development of new devices used in the neuroscience field, e.g., DBS, virtual brain

    * Current molecular or pharmacological therapies or approaches like nanomaterials and nanotechnology that aim at treating brain related disorders, e.g., PD, AD, Epilepsy, Schizophrenia

    * Use of Artificial Intelligence in the investigation of brain functioning

    * Biological neuroprosthetics and Brain-Machine Interface"Models" - include organoids / stem cell / tissue engineering
